Library Access:

Independent scholars can borrow materials by obtaining a borrower's permit at the Main Library Circulation Services or any university library. Details on due dates, renewals, and fines are available on the Circulation Policies website.

HawkID Creation:

HawkIDs are initiated through the collegiate unit. Department staff must create a temporary/complimentary appointment in the human resources system before issuing a HawkID to an independent/visiting scholar. Guest IDs for computer access is available at library service desks if a HawkID is not available.

Becoming One with Our Community:

HawkIDs are valuable for guests, collaborators, contractors, and other external users requiring access to Iowa systems. Begin this process through your academic unit. Upon completion, you, as our esteemed independent or visiting scholar, will receive a HawkID. If you have not obtained a HawkID yet, be assured – guest IDs for computer access are available at library service desks, ensuring a professional and accommodating experience for all.

Computer Access:

Guests without a HawkID can access computers by obtaining Guest IDs at the Main Library Service Desk, Hardin Library's Information Desk, or any university library. Printing from campus computers requires a purchased PrintKey from designated locations.

Fostering Seamless Connectivity, Wherever You Are:

The restrictions on off-campus access to library databases are driven by licensing considerations, aimed at ensuring compliance. We warmly invite you to explore our policies on Access to Commercial Databases and the Appropriate Use of Electronic Resources. This exploration is designed to provide support, guiding you in a welcoming manner towards a professional and informed utilization of these valuable resources.

Library Love via Interlibrary Loan:

Experience the magic of Interlibrary Loan! Independent scholars with a HawkID can request materials beyond our shelves. Journal articles or book chapters owned by UI Libraries? We'll scan and deliver them to you through our Article Delivery Service.
