Where can I find information on bank failures?

Answer

Use S & P Market Intelligence Platform (PREVIOUSLY SNL Financial). Note: Each user must register and have their own login id and password (you must use your UI email address to register).

  • Navigate to Industries-->U.S. Financial Institutions-->Failed Banks and Thrifts.

The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) shows Bank Failures in Brief dating back to 2001.

The FDIC also publishes Failure and Assistance Data back to 1934.

For additional historical information, the FDIC provides their annual reports, 1996 to the present, in HTML or PDF format.
