When do I italicize a title for a musical work?
Answer
There are two broad types of titles. Form titles, like sonata or concerto, are titled based on their musical form. Distinctive titles, like Shaker Loops or Tzigane bear names that are more likely to be unique or unusual. Italicize distinctive titles, not form titles. Song titles, like "Una Voce Poco Fa" should be placed in quotation marks, and if part of a larger work (like Il barbiere di Siviglia), that work should be italicized.
Form Title example: Sonatine for saxophone and piano
Distinctive Title example: Danse de la chèvre for solo flute
