I'm thinking about becoming a librarian. Who could I talk to about that?
Answer
All of us! University of Iowa librarians would be happy to have a conversation with you about your interest in librarianship. The faculty and staff at The University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science would be happy to have a conversation with you as well.
If you are looking for options for places to go to school, please consider making sure that the school is accredited by the American Library Association and take a look at the American Library Association's Guidelines for Choosing a Master's Program in Library and Information Studies. You can find additional information about a career in librarianship in The Occupational Outlook Handbook: Librarians and Library Media Specialists.
Have you thought about working at a library before making the decision to invest in a graduate degree? There are some libraries that don't require a Masters in Library and Information Science for librarian jobs. There are also often other paid positions (pages, library associates, etc.) in many libraries that are open to applicants no matter your educational background. All this will be different from library to library, but getting a sense for what daily library work is like might be a good first step. Check out your local library webpages for updates on job openings.
