I'm struggling to understand what a patron is saying. How should I handle this situation?
Answer
If a patron's speech is not immediately discernible to you, try these things:
- Politely ask them to slowly or more loudly repeat their question and/or repeat to them what you understand is being asked of you for confirmation.
- Listen closely and watch their lips (or eyes if they are wearing a mask) to help you discern what they are saying.
- Be alert to context clues that may help you. For example, did they just come from the printer or a computer? Are they looking at their class schedule on their phone? Can you extrapolate from those clues what they may be asking?
- Consider turning to a coworker at the desk or consulting a supervisor for assistance.
Once the patron's message is understood, help reassure them that you are glad they asked and are welcome to come back for further help anytime.
