What are "Guides" and how should I be using them?
Answer
If it's after regular business hours* and a patron needs research help, Guides are one of the best places for them to start! Essentially, these are mini-webpages, created by librarians, full of useful links to library resources. There is SO MUCH MORE THAN INFOHAWK+ to offer our patrons and Guides can help point people in the right direction!
Guides are created for:
- specific disciplines (sociology, public health, etc.)
- specific courses (RHET1030, HIST2151, etc.)
- topic areas (Hip Hop's 50th Anniversary, Diaries, Memoirs & Oral Histories, Anti-racism, etc.)
- How-to information (Evaluating Online Information, Citation Help, etc.)
You should direct patrons to guides so they can:
- get started with research on their own
- find the contact details of subject/liaison librarians
- find a list of databases to search for their topic/discipline
*If it's during regular business hours, remember to refer patrons with research needs to the Just Ask Desk or to a librarian.
P.S. for our SLIS students: Guides are created on a "popular with the library crowd" content management platform called "LibGuides" from a company called SpringShare. It would be a great resume-builder if you created a publicly accessible guide while in library school, so talk to your supervisor if you'd like to work on one as a project.
