What is the difference between a Guest ID and a Community Borrower's card?

Answer

A Community Borrower Card allows individuals who are not affiliated with the University of Iowa to borrow physical materials, like books and media, from most campus libraries (excluding the Law Library). With this card, you can check out up to 25 items, manage your loans online, and renew eligible items.

A Guest ID, on the other hand, is needed if you want to use library computers or access licensed databases while on campus. A Guest ID does not provide borrowing privileges, but it allows temporary (30 day) login access to campus computers and on-site e-resources.

Many users benefit from having both:

  • Use the Community Borrower's Card to check out materials.

  • Use the Guest ID to log in to public computers and use InfoHawk+ or explore databases during your visit.

Note: Neither option allows for off-campus access to online databases due to licensing restrictions.

  1. Do Guest IDs give access to anything other than just a login to the computer? Are they useful for our databases or Infohawk?
