Can I check something out to a patron if they forgot their ID?

Answer

ID Exceptions Procedure

Here is what we can do if someone has forgotten their ID and needs to check something out:

  1. Ask the patron to show another photo ID, Driver’s License, or other Gov. photo ID (one of those)
If they don't have that, then...
  2. Ask them to provide their ID number. (If they don't know it, they can look it up easily on MyUI.)*
Type that in and then ask for their name. Make sure it matches what you see on the screen. Confirm ID#, address, or phone number in Alma user record (we don't need all three of these).
  3. Other exceptions will be made at the discretion of staff (mainly for known and frequent patrons).

A few things to note:

  • At every interaction when someone forgot their ID we will remind users that this is an exception and that they should bring their ID with them on their next visit.
  • If they have lost their ID (lost wallet and lost all forms of identification) please be kind and refer them to the lost ID office.
  • If you know a patron to be a "repeat offender" asking for this exception, please let your supervisor, H, or Connie know so we can intervene.

*To help a student/staff member find their ID number, guide them to MyUI (myui.uiowa.edu) and have them login with their HawkID and password. Then mouse over their name in the upper-right-hand corner to see their ID number.
