A patron needs to check out the anatomical models. Can you walk me through the steps?

Answer

Currently, the anatomical models are located on the gray shelves behind the Service Desk. We have recently changed this, and may be changing other things as we work on streamlining the checkout process for the models. We will do our best to keep this page current. Please let us know if you notice any incorrect information here that needs to be updated.

A binder is available behind the Service Desk with graphical representations of the anatomical models with labels and corresponding barcodes, which are also on the actual models, some of which also have QR codes with additional material per model.

It is generally more efficient to check models out using the binder before retrieving the item for the student patron using the key from the drawer behind the desk. The current binder system also includes paper slips to mark which models are checked out to patrons which relies on desk workers' consistency for efficacy.

  • Loan time for a model is 2 hours. Please encourage/ask patrons to use the models on the “library” side of the building (not take them outside the gates to the Library Commons).
  • Only two models per patron can be checked out at a time. Due to the limited number of models, the Libraries encourages students to share them.
  • Most of the models are comprised of more than 1 piece. When loaned or returned, a “note” will popup indicating the number of pieces for that item. Please ensure all pieces are included before returning/checking in a model.
  • When a patron returns an anatomical model, remember to also remove the paper slip from the binder marking that item as checked out. This is particularly important when there is an anatomy class exam and many patrons are checking out the same models within the same day.
  • Searching for the models in IH+ under “anatomical models” (plural) will provide a list of all available models. They’re also listed in the course reserve module under course HHP:1100 and 1150/instructor Kelli Taeger. Link in IH+: https://search.lib.uiowa.edu/permalink/f/7nh330/01IOWA_ALMA21844302150002771.
